Wonga Wetlands was established 9 years ago, the Aquatic Environment Education Centre 3 years ago and the Visitors' Centre was opened in October 2005. The Wonga Wetlands Community Advisory Committee believes that the presence of a "Friends of.." group will enhance visitors' experiences of a trip to the Wetlands now that the whole complex is up and running.

Currently the Visitors' Centre and toilets are only open when the staff of Wonga Wetlands and the Aquatic Environment Education Centre are present, and so at weekends and holidays there is only minimal information/resources available at the Information Booth. A "Friends of.." group would make these facilities available to visitors and also be able to provide additional up-to-date information and resources so that visitors will gain maximum enjoyment from a trip to Wonga Wetlands.

The Wetlands, Visitors' Centre and Aquatic Environment Education Centre host many community groups such as the Field Naturalists, WIRES, Rotary, Lions and Probus Clubs, and so it is to be hoped that they will form the backbone for a "Friends of Wonga Wetlands" group. We will hold a public meeting later this year to assess enthusiasm for the group's establishment and it is hoped that these volunteers can set up as soon as possible and provide visitors with the information and resources that guarantee a pleasant and informative time at Wonga Wetlands.
