Easily recognisable and growing up to 1.3m in length, these large birds feed on plant material both in and out of the water.
Breeding can occur throughout the year, but is most common between May and September. They typically build large nest mounds in reeds, laying up to nine eggs. Both partners incubate the eggs, and in breeding colonies they have been known to share nests and eggs.
