Australia's largest freshwater fish, the Murray Cod can live for 50-60 years. Adult fish are commonly 60cm in length, but can grow up to 180cm. Specimens have been caught weighing up to 118kg.
Preferring slow-flowing rivers with deep holes, snags and turbidity, adult Murray Cod feed on yabbies, shrimp, molluscs and fishes.
Breeding occurs when water temperatures reach 20ºC. A female can produce up to 60,00 eggs, each 2-3mm in diameter. On hatching, the young initially feed on zooplankton before gradually changing to the adult diet.
