Wonga Wetlands

European Carp

Also called the Common Carp, this species was introduced in the 1872 and has since spread extensively throughout
south-eastern Australia and the Murray Darling Basin.

Although farmed for food in Europe and Asia, Australians find them unappealing in taste, and the damage they cause to native fish and the environment adds to their lack of popularity.

Adults can grow up to 60kg, but most in Australia reach only 3-4kg. They are omnivorous, but their feeding habits cause damage to the riverbed and increase the water's muddiness.

Breeding takes place in spring and early summer, when large numbers of small eggs are scattered, sticking to whatever is present.
