One of Australia's most common freshwater snails, the Pond Snail grows up to 20mm in length. They breathe air, and live mainly in billabongs and pools.
They are herbivores, scraping food material from a plant's surface using a band in their mouth set with minute, horny teeth.
They are also hermaphrodites, with the male part of the reproductive system maturing first. After the snails exchange sperm packets, the female part of the system matures and fertilisation takes place. Eggs are then laid in gelatinous masses.
