Fox

Introduced in the 1860s, for hunting purposes, the fox is now widespread.

Growing to between 57cm and 75cm in body length, the fox is essentially a nocturnal predator, preferring to spend the daytime in its den.

Their diet is varied, but can extend to dead animals in winter and wild fruits and insects in summer. There is ongoing research into the threat the fox poses to native fauna and farm stock.

Mating takes place in early winter, with a litter of four to eight young being born in late spring.
