Wonga Wetlands

Red Bellied Black Snake

This species is widely distributed along the east coast of Australia, the Dividing Range, much of Victoria and the Murray Valley. While they are usually found near water, they will range considerable distances away.

Growing to about 1.5m in length, they feed mainly on frogs, small mammals and reptiles.

Their bites are venomous and, while not fatal for adults, still require urgent treatment.

Females give birth to live young (viviparous), with up to 40 emerging quickly from membranous sacs.
