Applied Ornithology Group
The Applied Ornithology Group was formed in 1999 within the
Johnstone Centre
area of the university, with the objectives of advancing our understanding of bird ecology and conservation in the Australasian region through research and training. The group has a core of five academic staff from within the University whose main interests are in ornithology, along with postdoctoral research staff, and normally around 15 postgraduate and honours students. A few other staff have interests in particular aspects of ornithology, related to their disciplines.
The group is well supported by laboratory facilities and equipment, including a mobile field laboratory for work in isolated locations. Group members are able to call on the assistance of specialists in statistics, biometrics, spatial data analysis and GIS, as well as colleagues working in other aspects of natural resource management.
The main emphasis within the group is in applied ornithology and especially, bird conservation, although all members also have strong interests in wider aspects of ecology and environment.
The Applied Ornithology Group has particular strengths in the following areas:
- Ecology of waterbirds (including shorebirds) and the management of coastal and inland wetlands
- Seabird ecology and conservation
- Conservation of predatory birds
- Effects of habitat fragmentation and habitat corridors on forest bird populations and communities
- Restoration ecology for degraded bird habitats
- Bird utilistion by indigenous and colonial populations of the Pacific Region.
