One of our superb old River Red Gums along Bagnall's Range Lagoon fell this week after several days of very high river flow.
Bagnall's Range Lagoon, which is an anabranch of the River Murray and flows along the northern and western margins of Wonga Wetlands, has been full in the last few weeks due to the extremely high flows in the Murray to cope with the late season demand from downstream irrigators. This high water level also occurred in January and the combination of the two soakings has left the soil along the Lagoon saturated.

It was all too much for this old tree which featured in last December's wedding, and it toppled over on Monday night. We have "pruned" the overhanging branches away from a walking trail but have left the main trunk as it is the habit of these trees to keep growing in a horizontal position with some of their roots still in the soil. So hopefully we will still be able to admire this old tree for many years to come (just from a different perspective!!)

However the incident emphasises the danger of mature River Red Gums and means that future events which involve being under such a tree will need to be carefully considered!!
