The "Pit" with the BioSub under the buoy.

Lloyd Godson is an increasingly rare breed of scientist. He is not driven by government regulations, by corporate benchmarks or by societal norms, but by his own agenda to show that you can in fact inhabit a self-sustaining environment under water for a period of time.
With a grant from Australian Geographic, an organisation seemingly dedicated to “out of the square” thinking, Lloyd has constructed a steel chamber, the BioSub, submerged this in the “Pit” and with the help of solar panels for power and his Biocoil for gas exchange, he is about to enter the cold water at Wonga Wetlands for as long as possible.

The Biocoil has been constructed on-site by a group of visiting students and a teacher from Cascade High School from Idaho in the USA. Essentially the Biocoil is a long coiled, clear, water-filled plastic tube containing countless single-celled algae called Chlorella surrounding a bank of light tubes. The Chlorella will photosynthesise, providing Lloyd with oxygen converted from the carbon dioxide he breathes out.

The rest of the BioSub is occupied by the usual home comforts such as a toilet, bed, desk, computer and exercise bike. You can follow Lloyd’s progress live from the website http://www.biosub.com.au .
Good Luck Lloyd !!
